For Mircea Cantor, "the hand of the artist is the most important tool," as it transmits ancestral knowledge and a way of life. Hence the title Hands are adjectives to numbers/Cergă cu vârste & cifre, as these carpets were woven in a centuries-old traditional style, the result of a multifaceted collaboration with a traditional weaver.

Woven with two primary colours resembling a codelike pattern, the aged blankets show numbers in decreasing order – a refection of the world metre in relation to Romania’s population. The nation has seen a signifcant reduction in population over the years, as many choose to emigrate to “frst world” nations. Cantor's collaboration with the weavers, who were so open to experimentation, dispelled the rigid notion that traditions reject or are sensitive to change.

The artist's participation is made possible with support from Alliance Française and Institut Français
